Imagine if iTunes was an actual store you could wander around in for as long as you liked, with music blaring the whole time. It was 5,000 square feet of wall-to-wall vinyl, as far as the eye could see. I bought plenty of records at other places-the Record King in San Rafael and Village Music in Mill Valley got a fair amount of my pocket money-but Tower was always the most fun. I get that, because as a kid in the late 1960s and early ’70s, my favorite place to buy music was the Tower in San Francisco, which consumed the corner of Columbus Avenue and Bay Street. ![]() In Hanks’ film, grown men and women, who as twentysomethings had gleefully hopped aboard what was called “the Russ Bus,” openly weep at the memory of their beloved company’s catastrophic demise. Two years later, in 2006, Tower’s assets were unceremoniously liquidated. But in 2004, the company was forced into bankruptcy, a victim of its own unchecked appetite for expansion, cutthroat competition from consumer-electronics retailers, tone-deaf marketing decisions on the part of the record industry, and viral file-sharing applications like Napster. As with the locations in San Francisco, L.A., and throughout Japan, the New York City Tower was an enormous success.īy 1999, Tower was operating more than 150 stores in almost two-dozen countries, generating annual revenues of a billion dollars. The first of a string of immensely profitable stores in Japan followed in 1979, and then, in 1983, the company opened a four-story temple to music in one of the most run-down sections of New York City. In 19, Tower opened larger locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. In 1961, the younger Solomon opened the first official Tower Records, complete with its famous red-on-yellow signage, on Sacramento’s Watt Avenue. Hanks’ subject is his favorite hometown record store, Tower Records, which began its climb to global dominance in 1941, when a Sacramento teenager named Russ Solomon and his druggist father, Clayton, sold used 3-cent jukebox 78s to their soda-fountain customers for a dime.įrom these humble roots grew the international empire of Tower Records. Turns out that working in a record store was equally personal for the folks behind the counter, in the stock room, or out at corporate HQ, as the 2015 documentary, All Things Must Pass, directed by Sacramento, California, native Colin Hanks, so movingly explains. ![]() If you were an asshole, then you got treated like an asshole.” Physical effort was required, as well as time and-ahem-money. Incredible as it may seem today, the mundane act of acquiring music also used to be personal, or at least required a personal investment: You’d hear a song on the radio or see a band at a local dive, decide you want more, and then make your way to your favorite record store to buy an LP or 45. Some songs will always make certain people happy, while those same tunes will just as reliably make other people cry. ![]() The company's more than 8,000 employees were music lovers who wore their clothes and hair however they wanted and showed up to work because they loved music as much as Solomon did.Listening to music is a deeply personal experience. Michael Solomon said his father's theories about what a music store should be were simple: Large inventories, long and late hours, and control by local managers about artists and records each individual store should stock. Solomon expanded to San Francisco in 1968, then to Los Angeles and eventually all across the world, with Tower Records operating 271 stores and selling $1 billion worth of records at its height in the 1990s. Solomon, who preferred jazz, country and classical music, offered something other stores didn't: A place to sift through every genre of music in one place, with the help of employees who loved music even more. The makeshift record shop officially became Tower Records in 1960. Russell Solomon first began selling music in 1941, at age 16, out of his father's Sacramento drug store inside the historic Tower Theater building. Solomon died Sunday night of an apparent heart attack while drinking whiskey and watching the Oscars, said his son, Michael Solomon. Russell Solomon, founder of the Tower Records chain that became a global phenomenon and changed the way people consumed music, has died. ![]() ![]() This program will then watch the FLIRC for the key codes, and send your different IR codes in response. If your amplifier isn't supported, you can use this with a FLIRC device to detect the volume up IR commands from the LG remote, and then send the proper IR command to your amplifier. Use CaseĪn example use case is LG's Magic Remote, which doesn't have a learning function, but does have support for controlling the volume on external devices it supports. Not only does it give your Raspberry Pi a very stylish look but it also keeps your CPU temperature reliable down to a level where no throttling is necessary.Īnd the aluminum heatsink will not reduce the WiFi signal quality, quite the opposite, it even results in a stronger signal than you would see with no case. This is a small program designed to use a FLIRC device to watch for specific IR codes, then transmit different IR codes in response. If you use the Flirc case for your digital picture frame and glue it to the back of your display, then make sure to turn the Flirc case upside down.ĭo it this way, and you can easily take out the SD card or even the board because you have access the screws and don’t need to loosen the case from the display. Here is a tip that I learned from on of my readers. So the answer to if there is any reduction in WiFi quality when the Raspberry Pi 4 is put into the Flirc case, is clear: on the contrary! The signal is even stronger! Maybe one of my readers with a physics or engineering background can help me understand why this is! A final tip that can save you a lot of headaches I actually repeated the testing to make sure that I hadn’t mixed up the screenshots but the result was the same. This was something I didn’t expect at all. The first position was about 5m away from the WiFi access point.Īgain, the WiFi performance of the Flirc case showed a higher link quality (74%), compared to 66% of the “naked” Pi 4. I then took the Raspberry Pi completely out of the Flirc case and ran the same test again without any case. I started the program with wavemon Onboard WiFi performance test results I took my Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB and put it in a Flirc case and installed the network monitoring software wavemon with sudo apt install wavemon -y But doesn’t WiFi performance suffer in a metal box?īut there was one question that I couldn’t find answered anywhere? Wouldn’t the onboard WiFi performance suffer when the Raspberry Pi was put in a metal casing? And at around US$16, it is even quite affordable. While you may not need it so urgently to keep the Raspberry Pi cool, it still looks so much better than the standard plastic case. And there may be more of those in the future.Ī few variations of the Flirc case have come up by competitors but I find Flirc still the best value for money deal out there.īy the way, the Flirc case is also available for the Raspberry Pi 3 and even the Pi Zero. I would strongly recommend to anyone who is building a 4K digital picture frame to use the Flirc case to keep the Raspberry Pi 4 cool even during hot summers. But for a digital picture frame, the only acceptable solution is passive cooling. ![]() The dynamic Raspberry Pi community immediately came up with solutions like fans in all sizes and ludicrous monster heatsinks. Through a firmware update, the Raspberry Pi foundation was able to reduce it somewhat but the case still got quite hot especially in warmer surroundings. This meant that even in hot summers, the Pi 3’s temperature never exceeded 60☌ (140☏) degrees in the little plastic case.īut when I started experimenting with the Raspberry Pi 4 model and 4K displays, the temperature went up to 80☌ (176☏) degrees. ![]() ![]() As image viewers don’t require a lot of processing power, the CPU hardly went beyond 10% utilization. In the past, my digital picture frame projects used the Raspberry Pi 3. But if you want something nicer looking, which at the same time reduces the temperature of your CPU by up to 20 degrees, then it’s time to look at the Flirc cases.īut I was wondering: Doesn’t the metal enclosure impact the onboard WiFi performance? I was in for a big surprise. The original plastic Raspberry Pi case is cheap and does its job. ![]() ![]() She is also one of those teachers that guides us whenever we are stuck with doubts. The higher the resolution the higher is the spatial frequency which makes the noise appear more subtle. The perceived intensity of image noise depends not only on its standard deviation but also on its spatial frequency. The spatial frequency of the noise changes with the resolution of the sensor. In this case the SNR is higher and the image contains less noise. The stronger the resulting signal, the smaller the amount of shot noise compared to the entire signal. The larger a photosite is the more photons it can catch in a given amount of time which leads to a stronger signal. Arri is known for its especially large pixels that are very sensitive to light. Generally, there are many different kinds of image noise and they can have very different causes. Image noise can be described by the so-called Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) which gives information about the relation between the whole signal and the amount of noise it contains. This is because they can have both a bigger and a higher count of photosites on their surface. Larger format sensors have the ability to produce less noise. ![]() Also, the mirror of the 3D rig affects both cameras‘ image quality (-1 stop of light, color tints, loss of contrast) so both cameras would perform slightly better under real shooting conditions. Anyway, it is important to keep in mind that the Alexa Mini doesn’t use its maximum potential in this test since its full sensor is actually bigger and has a higher resolution of 3424×2202 photosites. The same correction was necessary for the 35mm and 70mm focal lengths.Īfter the crop, the used sensor area of the Alexa Mini still counts at least 2740×1370 photosites which is approximately the same as in the regular 2K ProRes 4444 mode. Since most focal lengths on prime lenses only come in hard steps of (18, 25, 35, 50, etc.) I had to go with a 35mm DNA Prime instead of a 32mm on the Alexa 65. To match the resulting deviation of the angle of view I needed to crop the sensor of the Alexa Mini slightly. To get the same angle of view you would need to use an 18mm lens on the Alexa Mini and a 32 mm lens on the Alexa 65. In order to match the angle of view by focal length compensation, the focal length needs to be multiplied by the crop factor. Relative crop factor of the Alexa 65 to the Alexa Mini: Knowing these values, the crop factor can be calculated by dividing the sensors diagonals by each other: The Alexa Mini uses in ArriRaw 3.4K Open Gate mode (at 2:1 aspect ratio) a sensor area of 28.25 x 18.17 mm. The Alexa 65 uses in ArriRaw 6.5K Open Gate mode (at 2:1 aspect ratio) a sensor area of 51.15 x 25.58 mm. With Arri’s frame line and lens illumination tool, you can find out the actual used sensor area in different recording modes. The whole test was shot in a 2:1 aspect ratio which has to be considered in order to calculate the used sensor area. ![]() ![]() ![]() Monex Group ( OTC:MNXBF) ( OTCPK:MNXBY), which currently owns 94.2% of Coincheck, will keep all of its equity and at the SPAC deal closing will have pro forma ownership of ~82% of the combined company, excluding earn-outs or warrants. ![]() Coincheck currently has ~1.5M verified customers.
